One year since Heller forced Washington D.C. to loosen up its handgun registration… so, how’s that working out for ya?

In fact, police say they have no information that would indicate any gun legally registered since July 17, 2008, has been fired by its owner in defense of life or property, or that one has been stolen or used in the commission of a crime.

There you have it folks.  Mayhem.  Madness.  Random children falling dead in the streets.  Wackadoodle gun owners going postal and shooting up everything they see.  After all, it’s what guns do.

I think the thing that got me about the article was the fact that so few permits have been issued.

Today, Amy McVey’s handgun is one of just 515 that have been legally registered with the Metropolitan Police Department — a number that pales compared with more than 2,000 illegal weapons that have been seized in the same period.

Washington D.C. has a population of not quite 600,000. That’s substantially higher than the 380,000 folks who live here in Ada County Idaho. They have only “allowed” 515 people to legally own a gun! I haven’t seen the latest numbers for post election applications for CCW permits in Ada County but prior to the election the county was puttering along nicely averaging about a thousand new permits a year. And that’s just for concealed permits, not actual handguns sold or kept, which has to be orders of magnitude larger. Washington D.C. is a sick, sick town.

And yes, we have gun crime here in Idaho. It looks the same as it does everywhere else.  In fact, there was an article in the Statesman this morning about a guy in Twin Falls getting a 6 year sentence for illegal possession of a gun.

Ortiz, 40, admitted possessing a stolen semi-automatic pistol in 2008. Because he had previously been convicted of seven felonies, he was prohibited from possessing guns under federal law.

7 previous felonies. Out on the street. Carrying a stolen handgun. Don’t you just love the part that says “he was prohibited from possessing guns under federal law”? Yup. Criminals do criminal things. The law abiding don’t.

Gun control doesn’t work.  Let’s try to control criminals for a change.  After all, it isn’t a gun problem, it’s a criminal problem.

I suspect that the reasons so few guns are being registered in DCarer:

    1. DC is loaded with liberals who abhor anything to do with guns.

    2. A sizeable portion of the population have felony convictions on their records.
