In honor of the Pope’s visit to America, we’ll have a quote of the day today. It is from Martin Luther, when he was threatened with excommunication and put on trial for going against the teachings of the Catholic Church, and for his books showing how some of the Church’s teachings did not hold up to the Scripture. The Church demanded that he retract what he had written and taught. His answer should be an inspiration to all men who love God and freedom
“Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Holy Scriptures or by evident reason-for I can believe neither pope nor councils alone, as it is clear that they have erred repeatedly and contradicted themselves-I consider myself convicted by the testimony of Holy Scripture, which is my basis; my conscience is captive to the Word of God. Thus I cannot and will not recant, because acting against one’s conscience is neither safe nor sound. God help me. Amen.”
-Martin Luther April 19, 1521
