I was reading around the internet tonight and started bumping into a story about Wal-Mart changing its gun sales policy. The first couple stories I read made it sound like a business decision, based on which stores did and didn’t sell many guns. OK, says I, that sounds reasonable, from a retail point of view… after all, I’m pretty sure they don’t sell as many guns in the Mill Creek, WA store as they might in one of the rural stores in Arkansas. Makes sense to me, so what’s the big deal?
Then I ran into this story over at Reuters.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world’s largest retailer, unveiled plans on Monday to film its gun sales in the United States and create a computerized log of purchases in a bid to stop guns falling into the wrong hands.
Wal-Mart, which is the largest seller of firearms in the United States, agreed a 10-point code, which also includes rigid inventory controls, with a bipartisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns led by New York’s Michael Bloomberg.
The retailer said it will develop a first-of-its-kind computerized crime gun trace log that will flag purchases by customers who have previously bought guns later recovered in crimes.
FFL holders already have strict and rigid laws and rules to follow, about inventory control, record keeping, background checks, etc. But this sounds like a shakedown to me. Nothing like a little “cooperation” with the powers-that-be to ensure that a couple “willful errors” don’t make business difficult, eh?
Well, if the gun control fanatics can’t get the legislation they want, it appears Plan B is to shakedown the retailers to do their dirty work for them. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the idea of criminals getting guns any more than they do. But to enlist a publicly held business to do what the government is not allowed to do? I guess that’s the way of the future, isn’t it? Wal-Mart is cutting out much of its guns and ammo business in many locations, and initiating a much more rigid sales policy at the behest of Mayor Bloomberg and his buddies. I wonder what Wal-Mart gets? Hmmm. Wal-Mart. Arkansas. New York…. you don’t think… nah, forget I mentioned it.
Never cared for that place before. Less so now.
