Last year this week, we had temps in the 70s and lots of sunshine. I waited way too long last year to get my garden chores done, especially my building project, which was a raised bed for the herbs and “foo-foo” lettuce the girls wanted to grow. By the time it was built, and they got the dirt into it, we were into the hot time of the summer, and they didn’t get as much out of it as they had imagined. So THIS year, I made up my mind that I’ve got to get it done much sooner, so they can get some real production out of them. And this morning seemed like a good time to begin. The girls have informed me that they want three new raised beds this year (actually, one more for the “farm” and two for our yard), so it was plan and measure time.
The garden is not awake yet. It’s been raining off and on, and if I hadn’t looked at the calendar this morning it could easily have been late February, for all the action in the garden. One brave daffodil peaking out. The apple trees are all trimmed and their buds are swollen but not opened yet. One clump of garlic is still toughing it out, but we didn’t need garlic this morning, so it’s still out there. The covey of quail made it through the winter alright, but I’m not sure what they’re eating out there, because it’ll be months before the garden has anything edible for them in it. For as tough a winter as we’ve had, I saw no deer tracks, at least where I walked today. There has been a large owl in the walnut tree by the house, but we still haven’t seen it. I think the guys working on the new driveway might have scared him off for now.
The grass around the house is starting to green up, and if you hold your head just right and squint just so, it appears the foothills have a tiny green tint on them. Yeah, that’s probably optimistic, but any day now, right? Right. So Spring is just about here. A couple more days of showers, then a couple sunny days… in a month we’ll be into the 70’s again. And I’d better have the new beds in place, and full of dirt, or I’ll have new worries.
