So you’re probably all finding out about the Northern Illinois University shooter about now.  (The drivel on the two cable news channels is awful, btw).  My only comment is, the Idaho legislature this week punted on a chance to pass a law that might have allowed anyone with a valid carry license to carry on campus after notifying University officials.  And not just punted, but caved to pressure from the Governor and the big school administrators to kill it.  I saw a student on the news who was one of the ones testifying at the hearing on the bill, and his point was that the students are sitting ducks, waiting to die, in just such a situation.  He didn’t get a very serious reception from what I could tell.  Too bad.  He is right.  I wonder if anyone will hear him now?

We can pass a bill making dog-fighting a felony, but we can’t pass a law allowing students and teachers to defend themselves from deranged nutbags… pretty sad.  But try to get a college campus provision into a bill designed to keep cities and counties from restricting legal and licensed carry and “Oh no, we can’t have that”.

BOISE, Idaho — State lawmakers have agreed to rework legislation that would have restricted cities and counties from passing local rules regulating firearms in public places.

The bill has already undergone a major makeover since being introduced last week.

Sen. Curt McKenzie, R-Boise, acknowledged Wednesday he agreed to drop a provision stripping the authority college presidents have in keeping universities and community college campuses free of concealed weapons. McKenzie said he agreed to the changes after getting pressure from Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter and university administrators.

Butch, in my opinion, you’re wrong on this one. The kids are right. They’re sitting ducks, and you can pass as many laws as you want making college campuses “gun free zones”, and you aren’t saving ONE SINGLE LIFE! Graphic proof again today, film at eleven. How many more are you willing to give up, before you admit that people have a right to defend themselves because YOU CAN’T!

I agree 100%. The only thing they do is by denying CCW on school campuses is to create a free fire zone. This has been one point of the Idaho CCW law I just can’t understand. If faculty members and in higher education environments students were given the right of CCW an incident like the last couple of mass casualty crimes we have seen at our nation’s college campuses have the potential of being stopped by a legally armed and trained member of the faculty or a fellow student. The shear arrogance and stupidity of School Administrator’s and Government Officials continue to leave our schools wide open to a Beslan style of attack by terrorists or just plain crazies wanting to make a name for themselves going out in blaze of demented glory.

The reason the wife and I have CCW is because we can’t carry a cop. As I have heard and read many times when seconds count the police are only minutes away.

Senator McKenzie is retooling the bill to meet Butch’s standards… perhaps we should all email the Senator and tell him he had it right the first time and we’re behind him if he decides to take a stand on this one. Besides this public statement of my support, I’ve also sent him such an email.

I’ll be interested to watch the information that comes out about this nutbag shooter. You know, the assault shotgun, the 4 zillion rounds of ammo, the camo jockey shorts, the 40 page manifesto… unless he was just some lovesick schlub whose story won’t further the gun control movement, in which case this will all die out before Sunday.
