Did you notice that Huckabee is disagreeing with himself over the interpretation of the Constitution?  On his website, which I won’t link any more than I would RonPaul’s, he says

One of the greatest ongoing threats to our constitutional republic is the ever-increasing politicization of the federal judiciary. Instead of interpreting the law according to its plain or original meaning, many judges are using the Constitution and statutes passed by Congress as a mere pretense for imposing their policy preferences on the American people. This is unacceptable. The role of a judge is to interpret the law, not to legislate from the bench; and as president, I will only appoint men and women who share this view.

I firmly believe that the Constitution must be interpreted according to its original meaning, and flatly reject the notion of a “living Constitution.”

Sounds pretty straight forward.  But what does he really mean, and what does he really believe?  On CNN yesterday he talked about the Constitution being a “living, breathing document”.  You folks trying to convince us that Huck is some kind of new, true conservative had better quit drinking the Kool-Aid… there is a reason the media and the Donks want this guy to win the GOP nomination, and it has nothing to do with him being a conservative.

Fred noticed it too, and was quick to call BS on it as well.

This morning I heard that one of the other candidates commented that the Constitution is a “living, breathing document.”

Frankly, I assumed this came from Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. It is identical to what Al Gore said when he was running for President in 2000, when he said he would look for judges “who understand that our Constitution is a living, breathing document, that it was intended by our founders to be interpreted in the light of the constantly evolving experience of the American people.”

Imagine my surprise when I learned that this statement actually came from my opponent, Governor Huckabee, in an interview with CNN this morning. Now I know Governor Huckabee was talking about amending the Constitution, but I don’t think he understood that he was using code words that support judicial activism.

He does not appear to understand that reliance on the notion that the Constitution is a living, breathing document is precisely the kind of wrong-headed thinking about the Constitution that gave us Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion across our nation, and Lawrence v. Texas, which decriminalized sodomy.

I wonder what Huck would say if you asked him about the Bible being a “living, breathing document”?   After all, that is a standard liberal position as well. Of course, he wouldn’t go along with that, and it is precisely that idea that started this earlier in the week when he said the Constitution should be amended to be more in line with God’s Word.  The man is a populist and Constitutionally challenged.  The Constitution isn’t up for amendment to be more conformed to God’s Word.  Not by Southern Baptists, or Presbyterians, or deists, or Mormons, or Jews, or Scientologists, or Muslims…

And this brings me to a bigger point.  Huckabee is himself, a “living, breathing” politician… he means whatever you want him to mean.  And no matter how sincere and likeable he is sitting next to Lester on NBC Today this morning, talking about amending the Constitution by law and not activist judges, so many things have come out of his mouth colored by the needs of the moment that I can’t be certain of just what it is he DOES believe.  The first time you hear him, he looks like he could be the one.  But after you see him do his “I’m the one” act for lots of different groups, and you realize his positions aren’t truly conservative, and they don’t add up, the proper response is to call BS on his act and walk away.
