I took a couple of different calibers to the range yesterday afternoon.  Yes, I was feeling guilty that I haven’t been shooting since before Christmas.  I got there before it crowded up too, which was nice, because sometimes Friday afternoon you have to wait if you get there too late in the day… all the skip-outta-work-early guys show up mid afternoon or so, and 16 lanes fill up pretty quickly.

I’m not going to post targets, because I’m cheap, don’t change them out very often, and I shoot em pretty ragged.  But I was mildly surprised to shoot pretty well.  Lots of black, which is good.  The old Hi Standard 22 that belonged to my father in law is running pretty well now, since it came back from the smith.  I think I’d still like something different (maybe one of these?) because this one doesn’t fit my hand well, and I’m not especially moved by it.  I’ll keep my eye open for something at the show this morning.

Nearly forgot to change my glasses too.  My everyday glasses don’t pick up the front sight as clearly so I’ve taken to wearing a different prescription for shooting.  The difference between the first mag and the second mag is noticeable.  But you know what really gets me?  My left handed results (weak hand for me)… I have a slight tremor, and some days I really fight it.  Yesterday I didn’t think it was too bad, but my one mag on my weak hand was better than my right hand.  Hmmm…. I’d better put more time in with my left to strengthen it.  Even though I was scoring better, it is weaker, so I feel it in my wrist more and it takes longer to acquire a good steady target, and to be honest, I doubt I could have kept shooting that well for long with the left.  Guess that’s why they call it weak hand, eh?

The guy with the varmit rifle next to me was nice.  You can’t see those tiny circles when you run the target all the out there.  And the guy next to him with the laser… I wonder if he will notice that he’s squeezing and pulling his whole hand when he pulls the trigger?  Somebody in the high power side was shooting jdams or something, because you could feel them on our side.  I didn’t go in to see what it was though.  Wanted to go out and handle a couple new ones, just because it’s been a long time since I’ve checked out a new Glock.  Man, they’re really tight.  I’d forgotten how tight my 27 was when it was new.  Nice though.  (Can you tell I’m thinking about getting a new toy?)

All in all, a good afternoon.  And this is gun show weekend in Boise, so I’m happy.  The snow is almost melted, and my sweetie is almost over the flu.  Life is good.

Any of you folks out there willing to drink the “anybody but Clinton” or “anybody but Obama” kool aid?  Are you fooled by Huckabee’s redefinition of conservatism?  Are you fooled by Rudy’s “that was New York, it’s a special case” BS?  Let me ask you, how’s George Bush working out for you?

Now, I’m glad we don’t have Kerry or AlGore in the White House, don’t get me wrong.  But George Bush has been my biggest disappointment of all the men I’ve voted for.  And it’s for things like this… the Bush Department of Justice has filed an amicus brief in the DC case, taking the position that yes, it’s an individual right, but a complete ban isn’t unconstitutional.  From Of Arms & The Law

Quick read: Gov’t says, yes, it’s an individual right. BUT we join with DC in asking Court to reverse the DC Circuit, because it applied strict scrutiny to the DC law. It should only have applied an intermediate standard. That is, the legal position of the US is that DC Circuit was wrong, a complete ban on handguns is NOT per se unconstitutional, it all depends on how good a reason DC can prove for it.

He has a link to the full PDF, as well as some quotes.  Read it.  And remember this, the next time you’re tempted to join the “go along in order to win” crowd.  If you don’t elect a REAL conservative, the compromise will ALWAYS be from YOUR list of rights.  Think about this the next time Rudy McRombee comes kissing up to you.  They will always have a “good reason” to take away or severely limit your rights.  2nd Amendment, 1st Amendment, 10th Amendment, amnesty, higher taxes, health care… I’m just sayin’.
