Did you notice Larry went back to work? He’s still on the payroll, and surprise suprise, the Senate is considering the DREAM Act this week. Coincidence? Right. Did you know that he and Mr Crapo are co-sponsors of Durbin’s mini amnesty program? Kate O’Beirne over at NRO has some details.
..Determined amnesty advocates who lost the fight for “comprehensive” immigration reform three months ago are now attempting to grant illegal aliens “amnesty on the installment plan.” Illegal aliens who entered the U.S. before age 16 and who have lived here illegally for five consecutive years will be the first to qualify under a bill the Senate is expected to vote on this week. Senator Dick Durbin (D., Ill.) will offer his Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act as an amendment to the defense-authorization bill. Later in the month, senators will attempt to extend amnesty to agricultural workers.
Most of what little news I’ve heard on this seems to focus primarily on granting the children of illegals in-state tuition benefits for college. When it is presented like that, only us really hard core meanies could possibly be against it. But I urge you to look a little closer at the details. The bill would grant those benefits, but it also grants amnesty to what might be millions of people who came here and live here illegally.
..Under the DREAM Act, applicants for amnesty who claim to be enrolled in a community college, technical school, or university will receive immediate “conditional” legal status. Sound familiar? The Migration Policy Institute estimates that about 1.3 million illegal aliens will be eligible for the amnesty. Because the act’s provisions are retroactive, additional illegal aliens will also qualify. Along with illegal aliens who have graduated from high school or completed a G.E.D., any illegal alien, regardless of age, who initially came here illegally before age 16 and meets the education provisions qualifies for a green card and eventual citizenship. As green-card holders, they can all sponsor their illegal alien parents for green cards. To accommodate DREAM Act aliens and their parents, numerical limits on green cards are lifted.
I have to tell you that I’m very disappointed in both of our Idaho Senators. Both signed on as co-sponsors to this piece back in March, if I’m remembering correctly, and while I expect this to be Larry’s position, bought and paid for by the Ag industry as he is, I would have hoped Mr Crapo would have recognized the amnesty part of this legislation and taken a pass on it. Seriously Senators, if you want to deal with the illegals who are here already, I understand that and expect you to do that. BUT FIRST, do what we’ve asked you to do, and close that border, get real enforcement in place aimed at employers who hire illegals, don’t reward them for coming here by giving them benefits, and DO NOT GRANT AMNESTY to anybody. It’s not that difficult to figure out, and every time you guys pull this end-around, shell game legislation, it just puts your constituents off. But then, as we’ve seen over the last month, this is all about you and not U.S., right?

I continue to believe a person should not gain an advantage or benefit toward citizenship or legal permanent resident status as a result of illegal entry into the U.S. This only encourages further illegal immigration.
If that is truly the case Senator, please vote AGAINST the DREAM Act.
