William Kristol explains why Bush’s two terms have been a successful presidency.
Let’s step back from the unnecessary mistakes and the self-inflicted wounds that have characterized the Bush administration. Let’s look at the broad forest rather than the often unlovely trees. What do we see? First, no second terrorist attack on U.S. soil — not something we could have taken for granted. Second, a strong economy — also something that wasn’t inevitable.
And third, and most important, a war in Iraq that has been very difficult, but where — despite some confusion engendered by an almost meaningless “benchmark” report last week — we now seem to be on course to a successful outcome.
It’s an interesting article about things the MSM isn’t likely to want to mention.
One of the reasons you won’t hear many media people discussing the real successes of the Bush presidency is the desire by them and the 24% favorably rated Congress to make the 39% favorably rated President look as bad as possible, in order to make the anti-war position more credible. I really believe that the constant drumming of the “Bush bad, war lost” drum does affect the citizenry in a negative way that can be seen in the polls. Here’s another thing the MSM doesn’t want to mention… the idea that instead of losing the war, we could possibly win it. From IBDeditorials we hear about more troops for Iraq, not less. Here’s a taste, but do read the whole thing.
Iraq: Democrats are scrambling to lose the war in Iraq before it’s too late. But they’ve got a surprise coming: On top of the surge, generals are contemplating sending in more forces in a push toward victory.
There is so much more at stake in the Middle East conflict than “just” defending a fragile Democracy. Watching what all the potential Presidential hopefuls, from both parties, are saying about the war, and Islamic threats, it is clear that very few of them have a clue, much less a plan. It’s a shame the surrender party wants to play politics with it. But that seems to be the way they want to play this out… not with good, well thought out ideas, about how to defeat radical Islamic ideology, about how to protect America and to prevent the inevitable bloodbath if we were to pull out, or even what to do with themselves if they did get their way. I keep hearing the Dems say that they were elected in order to end the war. No, I don’t think so. I think frustration with the stupid party spending like (insert your own slam here) and acting like pork kings was a big part of it. When the American people get a burr under their saddle you can bet the reaction will be more like that on the amnesty issue, which is NOT what we’ve got on the war as yet, and certainly didn’t have at the last election. No, what we have right now is mostly grandstanding. Speaking of which, did you hear about Harry Reid’s slumber party? Read about it at Michelle’s. The worst thing that can happen to the Dems right now is for the surge to work. They have to get it shut down before that happens… for as much as we might disagree with Mr Bush on amnesty and immigration, he does have the war right. Keep praying on him, he’s got a tough road ahead.
